40 Years Strong: Annual Shower of Love Senior Event by Iota Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®
Kalamazoo, MI– The Iota Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® hosted our annual Shower of Love event that has been ongoing for forty years. This year, the event included 75+ seniors from the Ecumenical Senior Center with catering by Gleaves Gifted Hands Catering Company. Seniors in the Kalamazoo community look forward to the Thanksgiving luncheon and holiday cheer where they know without a doubt that they will be showered with the utmost love. Hence, the event’s appropriate name, “Shower of Love”.
The closed event happened on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 12PM (EST) in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church’s gymnasium. The closed event was scheduled in advance with the seniors of the Ecumenical Center on North Burdick Street. An inspirational reading was presented by Golden sorority member Celeste Shelton-Harris and our sorority member Dorothea Holloway led the group in singing holiday carols and also performed a song, “America the Beautiful”.
The event was first organized by community activist Anna Whitten and Mary Clark, the mother of Golden sorority member Sadie Miles, chair of the Shower of Love event. Sadie Miles has chaired the event ongoing for many years with a great dedication and commitment to providing a quality experience for seniors in the Kalamazoo community.
The Iota Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® served seniors their meals and provided them with gifts for the holiday season. The chapter comprises of 75+ members who all look forward to contributing gifts and serving meals to the senior community. Our favorite undergraduate chapter, Delta Chi of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® performed both a step and stroll. The event fulfills the international sorority’s initiative, “Empower Our Families” geared towards supporting and empowering seniors in the chapter’s local community. In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women.
